Obviously, an illuminated check engine light is an indicator that something is wrong, but as the driver, it’s impossible to know exactly what it’s trying to warn you about. When or if your check engine light illuminates, it will either blink or remain constantly illuminated, depending on the problem. A blinking light, or in some cars, a red light instead of a yellow or orange light, indicates a problem that needs immediate attention.
If your check engine light is on, the first thing we recommend is to check your dashboard gauges and lights for indications of low oil pressure or overheating. These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine as soon as you can find a safe place to do so and contact our team for next steps.
If no additional warnings are indicated and nothing seems to be unusual with the operation of your vehicle, you might want to make sure that your fuel cap is on tight. While it may sound bizarre, a good percentage of the time a loose fuel cap is the cause for the check engine light to come on. If your cap is loose, tighten it and restart your vehicle. Keep in mind that it may take a couple of trips for your check engine light to reset and turn off, even if the fuel cap was the culprit. If it doesn't go off after a couple of short trips, or if you notice anything that doesn't 'feel right" then you need to point your car in the direction of Kellogg and Tyler and get to All American Automotive. One of our technicians will do a thorough inspection and computer analysis of your vehicle and let you know the outcome and your options.
